“Do they care about us? Healthcare system in Wageningen”

October 18/2011

We have now been working on the project for six weeks. After some interesting interviews we have obtained a lot of relevant information, and we are now ready with our results. The results has revealed some interesting points regarding problems with the healthcare systems faced by international students as well as some interesting ideas to overcome these problems.

At present, we are working on the final report as well as a participatory workshop held with OtherWise November 3rd. We hope that all persons with interest in the healthcare system in Wageningen will participate in this workshop. Further details will soon be available.

After working on the project for 4 weeks, we are making progress to uncover problems faced by international students seeking healthcare in Wageningen. The process has been really interesting so far and has revealed some informative aspects of the healthcare system.

The last two weeks have been used for participant recruiting and execution of interviews and we are very positive about the willingness of students to share with us their experiences with the healthcare in Wageningen. We are now starting to analyze the results and looking forward to share them with anyone interested in this area. We hope that we can contribute to increase the attention to the healthcare system in Wageningen and are excited to present our project.

At November 3rd we are planning a debate together with OtherWise. The focus of the debate will be held in the light of our project and we invite all interested to participate in this discussion.

We are a group of seven WUR Master students, involved in an Academic Consultancy Project named “Do they care about us? Healthcare system in Wageningen”, assigned by OtherWise as part of Research Mediation Programme.

Since Wageningen is a gather point for students coming from more than 100 different countries, the healthcare system in Wageningen deserves some extra attention. They should be able to deliver effective care to the total student population regardless of cultural background.

In March 2011, OtherWise organized a Global Café in order to gain a better understanding of the difficulties that international students encounter in accessing healthcare in Wageningen. This event drew attention to some weaknesses in the current healthcare system of Wageningen. However, to provide concrete suggestions for improvement further research is needed. In the coming weeks, we will further investigate the nature of the problem.

How does the healthcare system in Wageningen function for international students? What is the level of satisfaction among international students? Which problems are commonly experienced by international students who are in need of healthcare? What actions should be undertaken to overcome these barriers?

In the following seven weeks, the project team will explore the barriers to effective healthcare among international students and provide some potential solutions to bridge these barriers. Our main method will be a qualitative study in the form of (semi-structured) interviews with international MSc and PhD students. Then, Wageningen will be one step closer to providing effective healthcare to all its students.
